Perhaps this is because Kirk was not Captain of the Enterprise, the Federation flagship, nor was he surrounded by Spock and Dr. Kirk's "charm" and risk-taking reliance on "luck" should still be intact, but Paul Wesley's Captain Kirk lacked the swagger and bravado William Shatner displayed in the role. Kirk may also behave differently from how he composed himself as a Captain in Strange New Worlds' finale. Instead, Kirk will eventually succeed Pike as Captain of the Enterprise, as he must according to Star Trek canon, and it will be under Kirk's leadership that the Enterprise will destroy the Romulan Bird-of-Prey in "Balance of Terror" so that a war with the Romulans never happens. Kirk won't become Captain of the Farragut. Pike's version of "Balance of Terror" takes place in an alternate timeline, which now won't occur and supplant the Prime timeline because Chris decided not to change his future.
